Day 5 - September 27

We started the day off by heading to the bank to start up my bank account so that I will get paid properly. Took a number. The ANZ bank is very efficient, you press for a number that's to see a teller or to see a specialist about a new account. I saw that there were 2 specialists. One hot chick and one old chick. Guess which one I got? Damn you machine, why couldn't it have given me the next number so that the hot chick would call my number? She looked like she belonged with one of the girls off of Suckerpunch. She had that hot look with a mix of badass, like she knows how to use a gun and wield a sword. Anywho, the old woman we got seemed pretty nervous, or just jittery. She didn't seem to know what the heck she was talking about. Anywho, I just kept looking over to the stall where the hot chick was while the woman was talking to me, luckily the walls were transparent. The account was finally set up. They had an account where you can get 6.5% interest. That's amazing compared to Canada. After that we shopped for sim cards so that I could get a local number. After shopping at optus, virgin and vodaphone, we decided on crazy john's. We decided on a plan, but turns out my iphone 3gs was not unlocked, even with the unlock software Dexter ran on it. The guy told us to go to Chinatown to get it unlocked. Of course!! where and who else could get an electronic device hacked. We went to a couple of stores as most of them said they can do it for $45. That's pretty steep just to unlock it. My sister and I decided that we should just do it so that we can get a phone number for me asap. The Asian guy told me to back everything up before we unlock it. So we decided that I would back up my phone that night and wait till the next day to unlock it. We decided to take the free tram that takes you around the melbourne downtown (CBD). It was pretty much a sight seeing tram for visitors, but a lot of the citizens took it too, since it was free. As we sat near the back of the tram, one of its passengers saw that my sister had a Canadian flag on her bag and asked which part we were from. We responded Calgary and she told us she was from Ontario. She was studying in Sydney for a couple of months but had a conference meeting in Melbourne and drove many hours to get here. Sucks to be her. We think it's about a 12 hour drive. My eye got itchy at one point. I rubbed it, then my sight went blurry. I either rubbed my contact to the upper part of my eyeball or it fell out. No idea. I started to squint the eye, I looked like a slanty eyed pirate. The tram circle took about 1 and half hours to ride. After the tram ride, we took another tram to St Kilda to look at a house share there. First impression of the house was terrible, as we walked up the steps, the grass wasn't very well taken care of, super long grass and newspaper bundles all about. We were greeted by a guy who was a typical pot smoking surfer dude. Super cool, but probably didn't give a shit about hygene. I asked if I should take off my shoes (though when i looked around, i didn't want to but thought i should ask just to be polite), luckily he said to keep them on. I thought I was getting a room to myself, like the ad said, but if that were to be, he said it would cost $250 a week for that, or i could share a room with 2 other guys and pay $150 per week. We asked how many people he had in the house currently, he responded with 14. holy shit, this was like a stow away boat for asians looking for a better life in canada. He said he once had 32 people one time. The house had 6 bedrooms!! As he showed us around, the bathrooms weren't very clean, it smelled of garbage throughout the kitchen and the floor looked like a used rag. We said we were from Canada and one other person in the house heard that and he piped up that he was also from Canada, from Saskatchewan. We said that's not a part of Canada. His story was that he took an ad to be a male nanny in St Kilda and flew all the way here, only to be canned 1 week into his job. He sounded gay, but we think his employer didn't want a gay nanny. Stupid Saskatchewan kid. He's just like the rest of those roughrider tards. After wasting our time in St Kilda, as there was no way I was living there, though it did seem like it would be fun with so many different people living there, we left and took the 1 hour tram back to the city. We had sushi rolls and dim sum for dinner. One of the dim sum dishes was a prawn ball with sticky rice, yummy (see photo).

The sushi roll was a sushi roll, uncut. It was pretty awesome. After dinner we got back to the hostel and called it a day. For the rest of the night, I emailed a bunch of people inquiring about living in a house share, not for room shares.
